I'm Sidrah and I joined Davidson Chalmers Stewart as a trainee in 2017. I completed my traineeship in 2019 and joined our Corporate team as a newly qualified Solicitor.
One of the factors that drew me to Davidson Chalmers Stewart was the opportunity to gain experience in four distinct areas of commercial practice. This left me better informed when it came to choosing the area I wanted to specialise in upon qualification. I’ve very much been treated as a valued member of each of the four teams I’ve been based in – something which has been reflected in the level of responsibility I’ve been given.
Our Partners and Solicitors are keen for you to gain as much as possible out of your traineeship so you will be expected to take a pro-active approach to the cases you are involved in. For example, I was allowed to manage my own conveyancing sale from the start through to completion within my first few months at the firm. This was a little daunting at first but the support from my peers and the supervising partner meant that I was never left feeling overwhelmed. The firm undertakes a lot of high value commercial legal work and, as a trainee, you are directly involved in this, with questions being encouraged along the way.
On the social side of things, Davidson Chalmers Stewart has a Charities Committee and a Social Committee tasked with putting on events throughout the year. In the past these have ranged from taking part in escape rooms or cocktail making classes, to the annual (and highly competitive) Halloween Quiz night. We also have a Running Club, which meets weekly and takes part annually in a sponsored run for the firm’s staff-nominated charity of the year. A work/life balance is encouraged and ‘end of month drinks’ are held in the office on the last Friday of every month, which is a great opportunity to wind down and catch up with fellow colleagues.
Overall, no two days as a trainee were the same. Each seat was varied and the traineeship was well-rounded, with close client contact and partner involvement from the start. This, along with the friendly and collaborative culture at the firm is just one of the reasons I decided to stay on with Davidson Chalmers Stewart after completing my traineeship.
