Under EU requirements and in line with the Scottish Government’s disease prevention plan, the cohorts and offspring have been slaughtered and movement restrictions have been put in place at the farm to prevent further contamination.
Currently, under Scotland’s surveillance system all animals over four years of age that die on farms are routinely tested for BSE. Although rare, there have been 16 confirmed cases of the disease in the UK since 2011 (and other cases confirmed throughout Europe in the same time period). It would appear that this is an isolated case and that no contaminated meat has entered the food chain so there is no danger to human health or the environment.
